Looking for a suitable constant current LED driver can be a lot harder than looking for a constant voltage model.

The reason is that LED lighting manufacturers design their LED lights to achieve optimum light output, which usually means that a very specific constant current is required to power them.

With constant voltage LED fittings they generally require either a 12V, or a 24V LED driver.

There is no such industry standard when it comes to constant current LED drivers.

MEAN WELL offers a wide range of constant current LED drivers with Australian approvals, which are sold through the MEAN WELL Australia sales representative listed on this website.

Many of these constant current LED drivers do have adjustable outputs, so if you do have a specific current output you are looking for, then there is a strong likelihood that there will be a suitable model within the MEAN WELL range.

MEAN WELL HLG-H-C Series

The MEAN WELL HLG-H-C series LED drivers usually have a fixed constant current output.  However, a version of these is available which allows you to adjust the current output. The actual adjustment range available is stipulated in the data sheet.

Typically the lowest you can go is about 50% of the rated current output.

MEAN WELL HLG LED drivers are considered to be a premium quality product. They are the ‘go to’ LED driver for the LED signage industry and manufacturers of outdoor LED lighting, offering exceptional reliability and a warranty period of 7 years. They have a rugged IP65 metal enclosure, so they can be mounted in areas, where they may be subjected to knocks and bumps, plus they are also weather resistant.

That being said it is recommended that LED drivers are not mounted in direct sunlight. This can cause the temperature inside the LED driver to exceed the maximum operating temperature specified in the data sheet. This could result in a failure, that wouldn’t be covered by the warranty.

MEAN WELL HLG-H Series

The MEAN WELL HLG-H series LED drivers are in fact constant voltage LED drivers, which can be used in constant current mode.

The constant current output ranges offered within this series are much higher than those within the dedicated constant current HLG-H-C series.

They have the same attributes as the HLG-H-C series. Refer to the following table for the range of constant current outputs available.

MEAN WELL ELG-C Series

The MEAN WELL ELG series LED drivers have a lot of similarities to the HLG-H-C series.

These are ideal if you still need a rugged IP65 LED driver, but are looking for something a bit more cost effective. The trade-off is a slightly shorter warranty period of 5 years.

Unsurprisingly, the MEAN WELL ELG series also has a lot of similarities with the HLG-H series.

When ordering any of the MEAN WELL LED drivers mentioned above, ensure that the model you are ordering has an ‘A’ suffix at the end of the part number. This denotes that the LED driver ordered is an adjustable model.

MEAN WELL LCM Series

The MEAN WELL LCM series LED driver has been designed for indoor use.

Each of the models offered has a user selectable output. If you can use one of these pre-set option outputs you can then also dim these LED drivers.

However, if the constant current output you need is not listed in the data sheet, then you may be able to achieve the desired output, by placing a resistor across the dimming terminals on the LED driver, this means that you will no longer be able to use the dimming function, as it is this dimming function that enables you to adjust the output current to the desired level.
