Fanless Power Supplies – MEAN WELL’s Conduction Cooled Power Supply Range.
When designing a system to address a specific application problem, one of the many considerations is often the environment in which this system needs to operate. Factors to consider can range from elements such as temperature, humidity, air quality and even noise.
From a power supply point of view, the PSU cooling method is a factor that makes or breaks a system in specialised environments. Fanned power supplies, although a typical cooling method, may, however, inadvertently suck moisture and dust into an enclosure. This can negatively impact the power supply's efficiency, generate noise and potentially leading to premature failure.
If the environment prevents the use of a fanned power supply, a suitable alternative is the conduction-cooled power supply.
The conduction-cooled power supply removes heat from the power supply via conduction, transferring it to a cold plate, where airflow will continue to remove the heat. This system prevents dust and moisture from collecting in crucial areas of the power supply, while significantly reducing excess noise during operation.
MEAN WELL features a range of conduction-cooled power supplies, all featuring semi-potted electronics that prevent damage from dust, moisture and vibration. These supplies have a 1U low-profile height for slim installations and a 5G anti-vibration rating, making them ideal for rugged applications.
The conduction cooled range comprises models from the LSP, UHP, and PHP ranges. Find the listed models below:
• LSP-160
• UHP-200/350/500/750/1000/1500/2500
• PHP-3500

Among this range, specifically for the higher-end models, the UHP-2500 and PHP-3500 have a water-cooling variation. This variation features sealed piping to allow water to flow through and transfer heat from the power supply.
Furthermore, another alternative to water-cooled and conduction-cooled power supplies is the convection-cooled power supply. This form of cooling is standard across the MEAN WELL DIN rail range and lower-wattage power supplies. The convection-cooled power supplies rely upon air passing over their housing, often provided by cooling within their installed habitat.
If you have an OEM design that requires a slim power supply, suited for applications where environmental air quality, moisture, or noise are issues, conduction-cooled power supplies are a great solution in these types of settings.
